SCMLS applications are open now!

We are doing it again! The National Repertory Orchestra (NRO) is supporting music education in Summit County in the 2022-2023 school year. Through Summit County Music Lesson Scholarships (SCMLS), students who are engaged in a music program will have equitable access to private instruction with musicians and teachers. Launched in 2021, the program is a coordinated response to the COVID-19 Pandemic’s impact on school-based music programs in our area.

The goals of Summit County Music Lesson Scholarships are to:
• Inspire middle and high school musicians in their pursuit of excellence.
• Develop students’ technical aptitude and musicianship on the chosen instrument.
• Build confidence, focus and social-emotional skills through music.
• Provide work for underemployed professional musicians and educators inside and outside the community.
• Continue a model for music education initiatives augmenting Summit County Schools’ curricular objectives.

Eligible Students:
• Reside in Summit County.
• Are in 6th through 12th grades (public school, independent, in-person, remote learning or homeschool).
• Know basic skills on an instrument or are engaged in a music program or any activity where the focus is music and music-making.
• Have access to their instrument.

Lessons:
Sessions will be 30 – 60 minutes, occur once per week and begin the week of November 14th, 2022, continuing through the week of May 26, 2023. Currently, students must be able to supply their own instrument for lessons. The NRO is working to offer instruction in Piano, Voice, Guitar, Violin, Cello, Flute, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone and Percussion. Lessons, however, are not guaranteed and will be determined based on the availability and expertise of the instructors.

We are also committed to the safety of the community, the teachers and the students while sharing the joys of music. Lessons will be offered online or in-person pending public health guidelines and the availability/location of instructors.

The National Repertory Orchestra has numerous full and partial scholarships to offer. In the event of extremely high demand, a half scholarship may be available. Costs to the applicant would be no more than $15.00 per half-hour session.

Instructors:
The NRO is first looking to the local community and surrounding areas for music teachers. NRO alumni will join our team of instructors as well! Additionally, students may list their current teacher on the application, and we will be happy to reach out to them.
Applications:

Student applications are available on Friday, October 28, 2022, at NROmusic.org and will be open until lessons are filled. Applicants must list the name and contact information of their school music teacher, music program or activity leader. A committee will review submissions and award scholarships on a need basis.
