The National Repertory Orchestra opens applications for young music students to receive private instruction with local music teachers and NRO Alumni.

The National Repertory Orchestra (NRO) is once again supporting music education in Summit County. Through Summit County Music Lesson Scholarships (SCMLS), students engaged in a music program will have equitable access to private instruction with musicians and teachers.

The program, launched in 2021, is a coordinated response to the COVID-19 Pandemic’s impact on school-based music programs in the area. Scholarships will fully or partially fund after-school studies in various instruments and are available for scholars, 6th through 12th grades, who are already engaged in a music program.

“Music education is at the core of the NRO mission, as is developing socially conscious musicians,” said Dave DePeters, NRO CEO. “SCMLS is designed to engage our Summit youth on an even playing field. We believe all people should have access to this life-changing opportunity, and we are grateful to Summit County for supporting the program.”

The NRO is first looking to the local community and surrounding areas for music teachers. This year, NRO alumni will also join the team of online instructors filling in where support within the Summit may not be available.

The organization is also working to offer instruction in Piano, Voice, Guitar, Violin, Cello, Clarinet, Flute, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone and Percussion. Lessons, however, will be determined based on the availability and expertise of the instructors.

Sessions will be 30 or 60 minutes, occur one time per week and begin the week of February 28, 2022, continuing through the week of May 23, 2022. Currently, students must be able to supply their instruments for lessons.

Instruction will be online or in-person in whichever platform is best to safeguard the community, teachers and the students while sharing the joys of music. Public health guidelines and the availability/location of instructors will also play a role in the offerings.

Student applications are available now at NROmusic.org and will be open until lessons are filled. A committee will review submissions and award scholarships on a need basis.

The goals of Summit County Music Lesson Scholarships are to:

  • Inspire middle and high school musicians in their pursuit of excellence.
  • Develop students’ technical aptitude and musicianship on the chosen instrument.
  • Build confidence, focus and social-emotional skills through music.
  • Provide work for underemployed professional musicians and educators inside and outside the community.
  • Continue a model for music education initiatives augmenting Summit County Schools’ curricular objectives.

Eligible Students:

  • Reside in Summit County.
  • Are in 6th through 12th grades (public school, independent, in-person, remote learning or homeschool).
  • Know basic skills on an instrument or are engaged in a music program or any activity where the focus is music and music-making.
  • Have access to their instrument.
