Madeleine Zarry is a 22 year old violinist from Toronto, Ontario. She is currently in her fourth year at Oberlin Conservatory under the tutelage of William van der Sloot. Madeleine was a member of the 2017 and 2019 National Youth Orchestra of Canada, and in 2020 was a recipient of the orchestra’s Award of Excellence. During her time at Oberlin, she has worked with various artists including Rachel Barton-Pine and Donald Weilerstien. In 2022, Madeleine was awarded associate concertmaster for Oberlin’s Carnegie Hall performance of Beethoven 9 for the United Nations, as well as concertmaster for Oberlin’s Carnegie Hall performance of Nathaniel Dett’s the Ordering of Moses.

What is something interesting that people may not know about you?
A cat once fell down my chimney into a lit fire, she was a stray and I rescued and adopted her. Her name is Toasty.

When taking a break from music-making, what is your favorite thing to do?
Playing board games/card games of any kind.

What are you most looking forward to this summer with the NRO?
I hope to learn how to efficiently and professionally prepare music in a short amount of time as well as how to become a responsive and sensitive orchestral player.
