Andres Lopera, May 2012The NRO is proud to announce Andres Lopera as our Assistant Conductor in the 2014 season!

Andres Lopera is the newly appointed Music Director of the Metropolitan Youth Symphony after a year-long international search. Now in his second season as Music Director, in the 2013-14 season Maestro Lopera has brought with him a wealth of experience with orchestras in North and South America. Last season alone, he guest conducted the Oregon Symphony, the New World Symphony and the Portland Columbia Symphony, and was the lead conductor in a collaborative project held in Honduras between the Youth Orchestra of the Americas and the Honduran government.

Andres Lopera holds a Master’s degree in orchestral conducting from the New England Conservatory of Music, a Master’s degree in trombone performance from the University of Texas at Austin, and a double degree in conducting and trombone from the Universidad EAFIT in Medellin, Colombia. He was the assistant conductor of the New England Conservatory’s Conservatory Youth Symphony and the founder and director of the Boston Latin-American Orchestra (BLAO), a chamber orchestra that celebrates Latin-American orchestral music in non-traditional settings for audiences unfamiliar with classical music. Mr. Lopera brings with him a huge passion for music and community engagement, and a strong belief in the transformational power of music for young players.
