Ilana Setapen smallIlana Setapen, associate concertmaster of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, will conduct a violin master class from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. Friday at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, 608 New York Ave., Sheboygan.

String teachers and students in the Sheboygan area and the Sheboygan Symphony Orchestra are invited to attend the free event. The workshop is open to the public, including both musicians and non-musicians. Observers are welcome.

Setapen also will be performing with the Sheboygan Symphony Orchestra during its concert 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Stefanie H. Weill Center for the Performing Arts, 826 N. Eighth St., Sheboygan. She will be the featured guest artist, performing Prokofiev’s “Violin Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 63.”

Setapen has won top prizes in many competitions, including the Irving M. Klein International String Competition, the Pasadena Showcase Competition and the Kingsville International Competition.

At the age of 21, she became concertmaster of the Riverside Philharmonic in Los Angeles. She also has held concertmaster positions with the Juilliard Orchestra, the Colburn Orchestra, the American Youth Symphony, the National Repertory Orchestra and the USC Thornton Symphony.

Also a passionate chamber musician, Setapen was for two years the first violinist of the Calla Quartet in New York. Her talent also led her to collaborations with artists such as Ron Leonard, Lynn Harrell, Toby Appel, Peter Stumpf, Paul Coletti, the Fine Arts Quartet, Frank Almond, Joe Johnson, Todd Levy and David Geber.

Solo and chamber music performances have brought her abroad to France, Brazil, Holland, England, Monaco and Italy.

She is now the first violinist of the Milwaukee-based Arcas Quartet.
