What inspired you to become a musician?
The ability to express so much without words has always drawn me in. Music communicates emotions and ideas that language simply cannot, and that quiet, profound power is what first pulled me toward it — and keeps me coming back.
Name your favorite composers and/or pieces:
Claude Debussy and Dorothy Ashby — seasons may change, but I always find myself returning to both. Debussy’s impressionistic textures feel boundless, while Dorothy Ashby’s pioneering harp compositions continue to inspire and challenge me.
What is an interesting fact about you and/or your instrument?
While the harp is most associated with classical music, I’ve spent the past few years pushing its boundaries into jazz and electronics. That exploration has grown into my own jazz trio, the Kari Novilla Trio, now performing both abroad and in the States.
When taking a break from music-making, what is your favorite thing to do?
I love staying active by weight-training, running, or going swing dancing!
Why did you choose the NRO?
The NRO’s reputation spoke for itself, but equally compelling was the chance to spend part of the summer in a beautiful setting, making great music with outstanding musicians.
