Jacob O’Toole

Hometown:
Kansas City, Missouri

Education:
University of North Texas, Bachelor of Music (2029)

Bio:
Jacob O’Toole is a double bassist from Kansas City, Missouri. He has been a member of his local youth symphony throughout high school and attended the Eastern Music Festival in 2024. Fun fact: he originally wanted to play violin when he signed up for his elementary school’s orchestra. However, once they ran out of violins, Jacob was stuck with the last instrument available, the double bass!

What inspired you to become a musician?
When I first started playing bass, I was a part of a local youth ensemble. One day, a guest artist, a double bass professor, came and played an excerpt of a solo as a sort of “get to know the instrument” presentation. Seeing the bass being played so beautifully in such a high register had me hooked from that moment on.

Name your favorite composers and/or pieces:
Late romantic German composers such as Mahler and Strauss are easily some of my favorites. They really knew how to keep bass players in the practice room!

What is an interesting fact about you and/or your instrument?
An interesting fact about me is that I can play the hand flute!

When taking a break from music-making, what is your favorite thing to do?
I enjoy outdoor activities, whether it’s going for a quick walk around my neighborhood or hitting local mountain bike trails.

Why did you choose the NRO?
I chose the NRO for its unique combination of experiences, whether it be the extensive community engagement and outreach, or the strenuous program schedule. Both of which will help me prepare for a career in orchestral performance. In my career, I want to be able to do the exact same in any community I become a part of, as I believe engaging with the community is paramount to keeping this art alive and well. Not to mention, the gorgeous location will surely keep me busy in my downtime.
