What inspired you to become a musician?
My mom is a professional vocalist so I grew up around a lot of music and knew that it was something I wanted to be involved with it myself! I tried out a bunch of instruments as a kid and eventually landed on flute in 6th grade, discovered my love for ensemble playing in band class, and continued to enjoy the process of practicing and improving.
Name your favorite composers and/or pieces:
My favorites include Ravel, specifically Daphnis et Chloe and the Introduction and Allegro, as well as Debussy, specifically the flute, viola, harp trio. I enjoy both of these composers for the amount of color and emotion in their compositions and how challenging, but rewarding, it is to work on these pieces as an ensemble.
What is an interesting fact about you and/or your instrument?
I was a figure skater for about 15 years and spent several years of that time competing with a synchronized skating team.
When taking a break from music-making, what is your favorite thing to do?
I love to take walks with friends, especially when going to check out a new coffee shop or bakery. I’m also a big fan of craft projects and spend a lot of my time off doing needlework.
Why did you choose the NRO?
I chose the NRO because of the immense amount of repertoire we’ll have the opportunity to perform over the course of the summer. As someone with goals to become a professional orchestral musician, the exposure to this amount of music, much of which I’ll be learning and performing for the first time, is invaluable to building my catalog of musical experience. Additionally, I’m really drawn to performing with an ensemble of musicians who love orchestral playing as much as I do!
