Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Bachelor of Music (2027)

Bio:
Originally from Marietta, Georgia, George Young is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Viola Performance at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He is a recipient of the Wells Scholarship at IU, and he has studied with Professors Li-Kuo Chang and Stephen Wyrczynski. He started playing the viola at age 11, and he aspires to a professional career as an orchestral musician. At the center of George’s life is his faith in Jesus Christ.

What inspired you to become a musician?
Dr. Perry Holbrook, Mrs. Cindy Beard, and my wonderful parents. For my entire musical career, they have led me, encouraged me, molded and motivated me, and inspired me. They were, are, and will continue to be my teachers, mentors, and cheerleaders.

Name your favorite composers and/or pieces:
Strauss and Mahler are among my favorite composers.

What is an interesting fact about you and/or your instrument?
I play on a 2023 Timothy Johnson viola which was made specifically for me. The instrument has a unique “festooned” shape that takes inspiration from Renaissance-era design. My viola’s name is Werther, named after both the caramel candies and the Massenet opera protagonist.

When taking a break from music-making, what is your favorite thing to do?
I love reading fantasy and science fiction books; I love Brandon Sanderson and have read (and re-read) almost all of his Cosmere novels. I also enjoy spending time reading and meditating on the Bible, and reading Christian apologetics and theological writings, particularly those by C.S. Lewis. I enjoy spending time outside, canoeing, hiking, and camping.

Why did you choose the NRO?
Among summer festivals in the United States, few match the professionalism and rigor of the NRO. I wanted to spend my summer experiencing what it is truly like to perform in a professional orchestra, tackling demanding repertoire on a weekly basis. As an aspiring orchestral musician, I place tremendous value on pre-professional opportunities like this. I truly feel that my acceptance to the NRO was a blessing, and I am excited to be making music in Breckenridge this summer!
