What inspired you to become a musician?
I needed an extra elective in middle school, so I signed up for orchestra because I was horrible at singing and didn't want to blow into things. I chose the double bass because at the time I was very tall for my age and I was told that all the cool people played bass (to this day I still believe this). After learning how to play and seeing and listening to what one can do with the bass, I couldn't imagine doing anything else with my life.
Name your favorite composers and/or pieces:
I'm a sucker for romantic and lush melodies. Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky transforms me into another world with their compositions. I also love Bottesini, a pioneer for double bass solo music.
What is an interesting fact about you and/or your instrument?
I was adopted from Busan, Korea when I was 6 months old. Ever since I've lived in Houston, Texas. I play on a early 1900s German bass. What I find interesting is the maker and exact year the bass was made is unknown.
When taking a break from music-making, what is your favorite thing to do?
I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I would like to call myself a bit of a foodie, I love trying new foods and cooking. I am also proud to have a private lesson studio in Houston teaching in local middle and high schools.
Why did you choose the NRO?
I chose NRO because of the amazing reputation and experience I had last summer, as well as the overwhelming success that past musicians have had after NRO. Being immersed in the orchestral environment that NRO creates helps prepare me for my goal of playing in a professional symphony. Surrounding myself with other musicians alike and learning from them will be very inspiring.
